A landmark waterfront redevelopment is set to transform the Townsville wharves into a vibrant tourism and lifestyle destination.

The Flinders Street Wharves project is a city-shaping initiative that includes the adaptive reuse and revitalisation of the heritage-listed Burns, Philp & Company building, originally built in 1895, into a high-end hospitality and events precinct.

Complementing the historic building, a new pontoon-based restaurant and bar will enhance the water’s edge, delivering a unique dining experience within the marina.

Key features of the development include:

- Early Works: demolition, structural works, roof replacement
- Main building: restaurant, three bars (rooftop bar, external bar and internal)
- Pontoon: restaurant, 2 x pontoons for boats to dock
- Precinct Upgrades: upgrades to services, pedestrian connections, boardwalks, landscaping, gangways and landings for access from the boardwalk

The initiative supports tourism growth and revitalisation of the precinct, with the project backed by a state government tourism grant (exclusively for the pontoon restaurant) and is expected to generate significant economic and social value for the region.

Sidecar is engaged to provide full project management and superintendent services, which include overseeing design coordination, construction delivery, and stakeholder engagement. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2025, weather and construction permitting.
